Nepal is one of the world’s great adventure cycling destinations, a country where subtropical plains, terraced hillsides and traditional villages rise towards the spectacular peaks of the Himalayas. Ancient temples, Buddhist stupas and mountain communities add a rich cultural dimension to journeys through some of Asia’s most dramatic landscapes.

redspokes offers two very different cycling adventures featuring Nepal. Our Nepal cycling tour explores the Kathmandu Valley before heading through the hills towards the tropical Terai and Chitwan National Park, combining mountain scenery, rural communities and wildlife.

For a more demanding Himalayan expedition, our Lhasa to Kathmandu tour begins high on the Tibetan Plateau and crosses some of the highest roads in the world before descending towards Nepal. With views of Mount Everest and an extraordinary journey across the Himalayas, it is one of the most challenging cycling adventures in the redspokes programme.

Nepal is a country of remarkable geographical contrasts. In a relatively short distance, the landscape rises from the subtropical plains of the Terai through forested hills and fertile valleys to the immense Himalayan range, home to eight of the world’s fourteen highest mountains.

Culture and religion are equally woven into the landscape. Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries sit alongside ancient towns and rural villages, while prayer flags, shrines and stupas are familiar sights throughout the country. Kathmandu Valley in particular has an extraordinary concentration of historic architecture and religious heritage.

Cycling offers a rewarding way to experience Nepal beyond its best-known trekking routes. Mountain roads and rural tracks lead through terraced farmland, forests and traditional communities, while the constantly changing altitude creates an exceptional variety of landscapes. Combined with the warmth of the Nepalese people and the backdrop of the Himalayas, Nepal offers a cycling experience quite unlike anywhere else.
